Point 1: Determiners (a, an, the, some) come before nouns and give them specific meaning.
- I bought a hat.
- I bought an old hat.
- I bought the hat.
- I bought some hats.
Point 2: Use a or an when you introduce a singular noun. Use an if the noun or adjective starts with a vowel sound.
- I have a bike.
- I have a new bike.
- I have an apple.
- I have an old bike.
Point 3: Use some to introduce an uncountable noun or a plural noun.
- I have some pain in my arm.
- She has some money for me.
- We have some pets.
- I made some cookies.
Point 4: Use the when the speaker and listener both know what is being talked about.
- I got the drinks for the party.
- I like the new cafe.
- When is the meeting?
- Who is the new guy at work?
